HISTORY
In the 19th century, the land where the South Shore Club now stands held Kaye’s Park, known as "the Famous Summer Resort" in a 1900 advertising brochure. This resort, which started in 1873, offered a full range of accommodations from rustic tents to fully-equipped cabins, all with access to a grand dining hall serving up to 1,000 guests every night. Visitors enjoyed a wide range of activities including boating, fishing, bicycling, horseback riding, billiards, bowling, baseball, lawn tennis, a racetrack, a zoo, a dance hall, a gift shop, and orchestral concerts.
Accessing Kaye’s Park involved taking a train to Lake Geneva or Williams Bay and then transferring to the passenger steamer Arthur Kaye, named after the resort’s owner. The resort thrived until 1901 when newer hotels and the passing of Arthur Kaye led to its closure. The property was later sold to Northwestern Military Academy in 1911, marking a new chapter for the site.
Originally founded in Highland Park, Illinois in 1888, Northwestern Military Academy moved to Geneva Lake in 1915. The academy's mission, outlined in its 1919 catalogue, “To graduate young men who, with sturdy physique, sound scholarship, refined tastes, high moral and spiritual ideals, will be best prepared to make good citizens.”
Throughout its early years and up to its merger with Delafield academy, the school balanced academic rigor with social events, including dances and homecoming celebrations. Notable alumni like Brigadier General Douglas Ewing, actor Spencer Tracy, and Clarence John Boettiger, grandson of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, emerged from its halls.
The academy's impressive campus featured Davidson Hall, a neoclassical building with a grand entrance, large rotunda, and essential facilities like a library, dining hall, bank, barber shop, infirmary, and dayroom.
Today, remnants of the academy, including a historic marker and community flag pole, stand as testaments to its rich history on the grounds of the South Shore Club.
